Restoration of Trees and Forest
The rate at which we are losing our forests is very alarming. The rapid global population growth and expansion are endangering trees and forests. We need to restore the forests since trees play an essential role in combating the global climate crisis we are currently experiencing. The use of eco-friendly measures such as the use of recyclable grocery bags, water bottles, and other environmentally friendly products could go a long way in alleviating climate crises. However, there are plenty of natural resources that help in combating and inhibiting these climate crises, with trees leading that front. According to the United Nations (UN), cutting down trees accounts for up to 20% of the universal greenhouse emissions which are contributing to global warming. Restoration of our forests necessitates us to put communities at the heart of this restoration process to safeguard and improve their livelihoods and health. Trees play a significant role in housings, ecologies, jobs, animal habitats, and protecting the atmosphere by reducing the levels of greenhouse gases emitted in the environment.
March 21st is the date that the UN Assembly declared the International Day of Forest (IDF). On this day, the UN encourages local communities, community organizations, and governments to celebrates and creates awareness on the significance of trees and forests annually. Trees occupy almost a third of the earth’s landmass. Approximately, 1.6 billion individuals, as well as an additional 2000 indigenous cultures, rely on the forest for their existence. The sustainable management of trees and the utilization of their resources are vital in battling changes in climate. It can promote the prosperity and well-being of the current generation and that of the future.
We need to restore the forests since trees play an essential role in combating the global climate crisis we are currently experiencing. It is not yet too late to undo the damage that has resulted from deforestation. Communities and individuals globally are taking up the UN challenge and utilizing the opportunity to celebrate the different types of forests, acknowledging what the forest and trees have to offer, and implementing measures to protect them. Communities are reforesting during the rainy season to guarantee that trees planted receive moisture even without being watered by individuals. Also, Forestry Commission officers evenly placed within communities living nearby the forest, encourage community participation in the restoration of the forests.
