Flipflopi Naam - Lolwe Festival is coming soon. The unique boat created from plastics and flipflops will sail at Lake Victoria in March 2021 to take the #PlasticRevolution & #JusticeforLakeVictoria campaign in partnership with NAAM Festival and long many other partners including UNEP, BBC Media Action, Dunga Hill Camp, Water Bus and French Development Agency (AFD) among others.

The Flip Flopi is heading to Lake Victoria. To take the message on plastic pollution upstream in efforts to push for a plastic free planet and keep our water ways clean.

Flipflopi is 10 metres in length and weighs about 7 tones – it is quite a spectacle, and a considerable achievement by Ali Skanda and his team of boat builders. The boat was launched in Lamu – at Ali’s boat yard – in September 2018 by Kenya’s Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, the Lamu County Governor, media and crowds of local Lamunians all interested to see the conclusion of all the beach clean ups they’d either witnessed or been involved in. Flipflopi believes in a future that will be composed of sustainable products and systems that have been trialed in landscapes where they were developed out of need. That is why the Flipflopi campaign on beating plastic pollution is taking the message upstream to celebrate the innovators of Lake Victoria, who have found ingenious ways of promoting the circular economy.

NAAM Festival’s long-term objective is to see clean, swimmable, drinkable and fishable lakes around East Africa and beyond. The vision is to explore Arts and Culture for a better planet. The lake basin communities in East Africa need human dignity and solving social and environmental injustices could be a path way to this and many other sustainability goals.
