The future? - Opportunity to set our economies on a greener, more resilient path.

#climateaction #UN #greenwar #biodiversity #africa

COVID-19 has disrupted billions of lives and endangered the global economy. Many of the world's largest and most powerful businesses are desperate to see the economy recover as quickly as possible, with the shocks and cripples that Covid-19 has caused.

On the other hand climate change is at its peak, rampant wildfires, rising ocean heat, drought and floods. Biodiversity continues to decline as a result of habitat destruction and degradation. Over the past 40 years, there have been significant declines in healthy ecosystems. The decline threatens the livelihoods of over 100 million men and women involved in activities such as fish processing. The lowest income countries suffer directly and measurably from the increasing pollution and environment degradation, with women and children significantly affected.

To build back greener from the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, UNDP and its partners are enhancing support for climate governance across a network of interconnected programmes. Adaptation and building resilience is at the heart of these programmes.

We need to focus on investing in weather forecasting and early warning systems, build and support platforms that will set our economies on a greener and more resilient path towards social economic development. We must be at the forefront pushing our governments to enable and support green investments through targeted public expenditure, policy reforms and changes in taxation and regulation.
