Moral Failure?

#WHO #health #equity #Africa #vaccines #COVID

The roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine distribution is in progress. The distribution has clearly demonstrated the gap that is there between the "haves" and the "haves not". Wealthy nations have more COVID-19 vaccines than they need, which has prevented Africa from beginning mass inoculations, says the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Administration is already in progress in the high-end countries as the low income countries are still struggling to secure the doses.

Manufacturers of the vaccines are prioritizing approvals in the high income countries where the profits are higher rather than submitting them to WHO. It is becoming clear African countries will not be getting vaccine supply from the West early enough to control the second wave. So far, Africa appears not part of the supply priorities of the companies producing the Covid-19 vaccines. These actions will only prolong the pandemic and delay the process of recovery.

The process therefore needs to prioritize vaccination of the most vulnerable and seriously focus on equitable distribution of the vaccines throughout the world. Let's champion for equitable access to all.
