Backing biodiversity to safeguard society;
Nature-based solutions for societal challenges

#iucnwcc21 #naturebasedsolutions

IUCN defines nature-based solutions as actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems, that address societal challenges such as climate change, food and water security or natural disasters, effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits.
Nature base solutions have positioned strategically in simultaneously addressing a number of societal challenges; wide ranging from climate change, food security, water security, human health, socioeconomic development, disaster risk reduction and ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.
A holistic approach to nature base solutions should be in position to safeguard nature and society in a sustainable manner.
Dr. Radhika Murti, Director Global Ecosystems Management Programme, gives a clear distinction on what nature based solutions actually constitute. Contrary to Nature derived solutions and nature inspired solutions, nature based solutions form a basis of nature-reliant solutions to addressing societal and economic challenges.
The concept of nature based solutions gives a rather clear indication of the self-replicating potential nature holds. Nature based solutions should involve an integration of conservation science, traditional knowledge, social science; all composite of knowledge co-creation.
