Reaching the Zero Malaria Target

SDG 1 SDG 3 SDG 8

Globally, World Malaria Day is commemorated on 25th April of every year. This year's theme was "Reaching the zero malaria target". Malaria can cause economic disruption. It is evident that countries with highest Malaria cases are considered the most poor. The disease causes human suffering and can lead to loss of life that can directly affect households in search of treatment. Malaria has also negative implications due to the reduction of work force once a person falls ill, affecting a household income.
The push to reach zero malaria will not only improve lives but also increase a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
How does a country reach zero Malaria?
1) Political good will in Malaria prone countries, where policies are developed and implemented towards eradicating the disease.
2) Policies will lead to commitment of resources that would make the agenda sustainable.
3) The agenda will be made more sustainable with a stable primary health care system that ensures citizens have access to affordable healthcare services.
4) Involvement of all stakeholders especially community health volunteers to ensure targeted communities receive health care services especially in the hard to reach areas.
5)At individual and organizational level, people living in Malaria prone areas can initiate advocacy to lobby for Malaria eradication to be a government priority
6) Households can also practice preventive measures against Malaria like sleeping under a treated net , clearing bushes and getting rid of stagnant water around the house .
