“The overall solution to the climate and biodiversity crises commences by understanding the simple understanding that nature is embedded within our economies.” Bruno Oberle, IUCN Director General.
Nature encompasses the atmosphere, forests, and oceans grasslands among others, from which are derivative natural resources responsible for daily sustenance and ecosystem services; With nature fast taking a negative trend, UN FA0 as at 2010 estimated an approximate global net loss in vegetation cover by 4.7 million hectares per annum, noting an increase pulling the gross loss to over 10 million hectares as at 2016. Estimates reveal 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste in oceans. 269,000 tons float, 4 billion microfibers per km² dwell below the surface. 70% of debris from sinks into the ocean's ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on beaches. In terms of plastic, 8.3 million tons are discarded in the sea yearly. These among other statistics are a representation of the detriment in ecological integrity.
With a greater proportion of economic sources from nature, it is undeniably relevant to shift priorities; societies, economies and production interests to interventions and consumption models that do not only invest but also integrate nature. According to the World Bank as at 2020, investing in nature and nature based solutions is a balance pay-off mechanism for both people and biodiversity. The economic recovery foresees a post-COVID World that drives a great deal of focus towards nature sustainable interventions. The global economic recovery can seemingly address the COVID-19 crisis by improving public health, job security and physical stability among other challenges.
The launch of the Nature based recovery initiative by the IUCN aims at to ensure at least 10% of the possible 30% of all investments are channeled to Nature, particularly Nature based Solutions. It is thus vital to invest in nature based solutions that safeguard ecosystems, protect primarily food and water, safety against natural disasters and calamities, providing key ecosystem goods and services.
