Bruno Oberle, IUCN Director General: Nature and NBS are central to Global Recovery

#IUCNWCC #Greenrecovery #naturebasedsolutions
SDG 8 SDG 13 SDG 15 SDG 17

“A majority of investments have drawn attention and focus to reducing carbon emissions, with a less focus on the fate of biodiversity” Bruno Oberle, IUCN Director General. Policy decisions right underway regarding recovery from the pandemic will have impacts the future. Various countries around the globe are increasingly acknowledging the relevance of nature in building back a sustainable economy. The solutions to both the climate and biodiversity crises start by recognizing the fact that the global economy is embedded within nature, and not bound externally.
The plight of biodiversity remains a concern and responsibility of all parties and stakeholders, Governments, Academia, Private and Public sector through a whole of society approach; furthermore taking into account strategies and actions that integrate nature.
Nature based solutions most evidently are fast evolving, gaining momentum in various parts of the globe, presenting high practicability in the recent times with regards to addressing the seven societal challenges; not limited to climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, economic and social development, human health, food security, water security and environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.
With an ever increasing risk posed to the global systems by the eminent climate and biodiversity crises, the associated societal challenges are not about to cease. Solutions provided by nature often take into account the self-replicating role nature can provide towards addressing these societal challenges.
The green recovery in the post-COVID world presents a new paradigm of thinking and action that should take into account the role of nature enhancing sustainability of the global economy. Nations, Regions should thus take action and responsibility to recognise the role and contribution of nature through nature based solutions in aiding the Green recovery of the post-COVID world.
