Crop insurance can help mitigate farmers in Africa against adverse climate conditions

SDG 1 SDG 2 SDG 8 SDG 9 SDG 13

Most countries in Sub Sahara Africa, depend on farming as the main economic activity. Majority of them being small holder farmers in the rural areas, depending on rain fed agriculture. With climate change and variability, most of these farmers count losses due to extreme weather conditions. Crop insurance can assist in protecting farmers against losses related to climate.

Crop insurance is one of the ideal ways to shield farmers against adverse risks including climate change and variability. However, uptake of crop insurance is still low especially in Sub Sahara Africa, where small scale farmers are majority and live below the poverty line. Farmers have also little faith in insurance and this can be due to inadequate information on the benefits of insurance. There is need to sensitize farmers on the advantages of crop insurance.
