Communities vulnerable to drought in four counties in Kenya, have benefitted from the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) through cash transfers that have been replaced with relief food that was deemed as degrading. Cash transfers give beneficiaries options on how to invest cash received, cushioning them from shocks related to drought .

In the recent years, social protection systems have been on the increase with humanitarian agencies shifting their focus from direct food assistance for vulnerable population to strengthening safety nets which are more sustainable. Social protection is a multifaceted approach that assists populations to address the risks they face such as hunger, poverty and gender inequality.
