There have been success stories of innovation in plastic waste. In 2019 the first ever dhow and one of its kind in the world to be made almost entirely from plastic waste was launched. The plastic boat successfully sailed a 500km journey from Lamu to Zanzibar, Tanzania, to raise awareness on marine plastic pollution.

This March, the ‘plastic boat’ is set to sail Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest fresh water lake to continue raising awareness on plastic pollution upstream and show the importance of circular economy in mitigating plastic pollution.

While praising the FlipFlopi Dhow, Rachel Omamo Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya said that the FlipFlopi Dhow is a symbol of African Legacy and a beacon of action to raise awareness on plastic pollution in our water bodies.

Plastic that can be recycled should be recycled.

To reduce plastic pollution governments should accelerate investment in circular economy and support innovation.
