What we don't know about biodiversity - Soil biodiversity

SDG 7 SDG 13 SDG 14 SDG 15

Soil biodiversity is the life that exists within the soil such as bacteria, fungi, termites etc. These organisms interact with one another and with plants and small animals forming a chain of biological activity whereby soil is the base of the whole chain. Soil supports life and has helped human life survive. Even though soil is not visible the way the ocean is, it plays an integral role in supporting the biodiversity. Therefore, protecting the soil is our responsibility by reducing emission of greenhouse gases and chemicals which harm the plants and soil. In exchange of everything that soil and biodiversity has provided to us, we need to reduce deforestation, monocultures, overuse and misuse of agrochemicals. This will help to preserve the health of the soil which later can help us in climate change mitigation.
